Easy Options to Travel From Nice, France to Madrid Spain

One of the great things about living in Nice, France is the proximity to so many interesting destinations throughout Europe.  USA Today recently provided an interesting article on how to travel between Nice, France and Madrid Spain.  Below is an excerpt from the USA Today article.

From USA Today Article:

As of February 2012, both Spain and France are members of the European Common Market and so do not require separate travel documents or currencies between them. Both accept a valid U.S. passport as sufficient documentation for American travelers and both use the Euro as the unit of currency. The best method of travel between Madrid and Nice depends on how much time and money you have.

Step 1

Take the train for a long, though relaxing, ride. Start at Madrid’s Puerta de Atocha station. The actual train numbers and duration vary by date but can take as little as 14 hours with three train changes. You can take the AVE to the Barcelona Sants station. There, you switch to an Arco train heading for Figuera Vilafant. You then take two fast TGV trains — one to Valence TGV Rhone-Alpes Sud, and from there to Nice-Ville. You do not have to remember these routes or stops. Simply state your final destination at the Madrid station and the agent can determine the best trains to take.

Step 2

Book a flight from Madrid’s Barajas airport to Nice’s Core D’Azur airport on Iberia Airlines. This is the fastest, though most expensive, option. Air Nostrum actually operates the flight, which takes just under two hours. The Airport Express bus is an inexpensive way to get from central Madrid to Barajas, taking about 40 minutes. An efficient way to get from Nice airport to the center of town is to take the number 98 or 99 airport express bus. Your bus ticket also allows you to take all local buses in Nice for the day.

Step 3

Rent a car in Madrid and drive to Nice. This can be a costly option when you include gasoline and insurance fees, but you can stop en-route at any towns and cities that strike your fancy. The drive time alone takes a little over 12 hours. You may need an International Driving Permit if the police stop you in Spain. You can use your regular driver’s license to obtain the permit from the American Automobile Association. For a cheaper option, rent locally from either Auto Europe or Europe by Car. However, it may be more convenient to book through a U.S. car rental agency such as Hertz, Budget, Dollar, Thrifty or Alamo/National. Because you are picking up and dropping off the vehicle in separate countries, be prepared for an extra fee.
